No more funny business.

SIR – In these dark days when almost every headline seems to augur the oncoming apocalypse, you then kill off Alex. Have you no pity – you have tipped us over the edge. It now really does feel like the Biblical End Times. I’m off to start digging a shelter and taking my Alex annuals with me.

SIR – The sad news of Alex Masterley’s quiet retrenchment from the Telegraph marks the end of another chapter in his storied career. Given the current market maelstrom, his gardening leave appears wonderfully well-timed. I look forward to his inevitable return to the City – a banker of his skill and mastery will surely receive a flood of offers to help clients navigate the new Trumpian era. Until then, what am I to read at breakfast?
